Bryn and Maddox

Welcoming Maddox

Last week, our family grew by one.

Bryn and Maddox

Our beautiful little Maddox arrived, Bryn and Gemma‘s first baby together. He joins his big brother Ruben and his cousin Jimmy, three little grandchildren now, all loved and treasured so very much.

Gemma wanted an unmedicated home birth, which she courageously achieved. Maddox arrived safely at home. Due to complications after the birth, Gemma needed to be taken to hospital, but she’s home now, recovering, and they’re settling in together as their new family of four.

While Gemma was in labour and the day after, we had Ruben, two whole nights of him. Paul, Evyn and I made the most of every minute, sharing the time with him between us and soaking up his company. Walks with Kojak. Food shopping. A lot of playing. The simple, ordinary things that make up precious moments. He was so good with it all, patient, curious, learning, chatting away, the wonderful playful little boy he is.

Paul, Ruben and Me

On Friday, Paul, Evyn and I went in to meet Maddox for the first time. He was adorable. Tiny and perfect, in the way newborns are. Then late that night Bryn took Gemma and Maddox home, and on Saturday morning Bryn came to collect Ruben so he could go and meet his baby brother, at home, as a family of four.

Maddox arrived nine years to the day, and nearly to the minute, that Bryn’s sister passed away.

A day that has held grief for so long has, this year, brought joy and happiness too. I think Bryn’s dad and sister were both looking over them, especially on Thursday, wanting to bring joy.

I keep thinking how lucky we are. We’ve welcomed a new little one.

Welcome, Maddox. We are so glad you’re here, and you are so loved and adored.
