5 Free Things to Do with Your Children This Summer

Sunshine, smiles and not a penny spent. Here are five of our favourite free family days out (and in) this summer.

Summer holidays can feel like a marathon for parents, and the cost of keeping little ones entertained soon adds up. The good news? Some of the best memories cost absolutely nothing. Here are five free activities we come back to every single year.

1. A Day at the Beach

Nothing beats a proper British beach day. Pack a picnic, a bucket and spade, and let the children lead the way. Build sandcastles, hunt for shells and sea glass, paddle in the shallows, or set a challenge to find the most interesting pebble on the beach.

Top tip: Go at low tide for rock pooling. Crabs, anemones and tiny fish are endlessly fascinating, and it turns a beach trip into a mini nature lesson.

2. Explore Your Local Park

Parks are brilliant because every visit can be different. One day it is the playground, the next it is a game of rounders, a kite, or simply lying on the grass spotting shapes in the clouds. Take a ball, a frisbee or a blanket and let the afternoon unfold.

Top tip: Turn it into a picnic. Sandwiches always taste better outdoors, and it stretches a quick visit into a whole afternoon.

3. Get Baking Together

Rainy day? Perfect baking weather. Fairy cakes, flapjacks or simple biscuits are ideal for small hands, and most recipes use ingredients you already have in the cupboard. Yes, there will be flour everywhere. That is half the fun.

Top tip: Let the children do the decorating entirely their way. The wonkier the icing, the prouder they will be.

4. Go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt

Write a simple list before you leave the house: a feather, something yellow, a smooth stone, a butterfly, a leaf bigger than your hand. Then head out on a local walk and see who can tick everything off first. It works in woodland, along the coast or even around your own neighbourhood.

Top tip: Bring a little bag for treasures. Back home, the finds can become craft materials for another free afternoon.

5. Camp Out in the Garden (or the Living Room)

An adventure without leaving home. Pitch a tent in the garden, or build a den from blankets and cushions indoors. Add torches, snacks and a bedtime story, and you have an evening the children will talk about for weeks.

Top tip: Stargazing makes it magical. Download a free stargazing app and see which constellations you can spot together.

The best days rarely come with a price tag. They come from time, imagination and being together. Life is a journey… treasure it.
